چکیده
Ronald Plasterk is director of the Hubrecht Laboratory in Utrecht, the Netherlands, and professor of Developmental Genetics at Utrecht University. His work on the regulation of transposition in the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans led him to study the regulatory roles of small RNAs in animal development. He has developed methods for knocking-out genes in animals, such as nematodes and zebrafish. He writes a weekly column in the Dutch newspaper Volkskrant and presents a column on Dutch TV every other week.

Micro RNAs in Animal Development
Micro RNAs (miRNAs) are approximately 22 nucleotide single-stranded noncoding RNA molecules that bind to target messenger RNAs (mRNAs) and silence their expression. This Essay explores the importance of miRNAs in animal development and their possible roles in disease and evolution.

متن کاملKnocking out the Argonautes
Argonaute proteins are key players in gene silencing involving small RNAs. In this issue, Yigit et al. (2006) report a comprehensive study of Argonautes in the worm that places many of the 27 family members into a complex gene-silencing network.
متن کاملGENOTRACE: cDNA-based local GENOme assembly from TRACE archives
UNLABELLED GENOTRACE identifies the genomic organization for a cDNA using raw data from genome sequencing projects in progress (trace archives). Local genomic contigs are generated, allowing for example the design of PCR primers in intronic sequences to amplify coding regions of a gene, needed for example for mutation or SNP detection. AVAILABILITY The package and examples of output files can...
متن کاملDicers at RISC The Mechanism of RNAi
The pathway of RNA interference starts when Dicer cuts dsRNA into small interfering RNAs (siRNAs) that subsequently target homologous mRNAs for destruction. microRNA processing from stem loop precursors similarly requires Dicer activity. Two papers in this issue of Cell now demonstrate that Dicer is also essential for the execution phase of RNAi and explore the distinct requirements for Dicers ...
